Welcome summer!
The night of June 23 to 24, the arrival of summer is honored throughout Spain with a special night: Sant Joan.
Do you know the legend?
It is one of the most popular festivals in the Catalan Countries. In the pagan era bonfires were lit to thank the sun for its light and warmth. Later, with Christianity in power, the date was transformed into a tribute to the baptism of Jesus Christ.
On the night of June 23, the fires, music and dances come together to celebrate the arrival of summer. In Barcelona, the act of receiving the flame will start in Plaça Sant Jaume. It is customary to eat the "Coca de Sant Joan", a kind of sweet cake; Made with flour, milk, butter and sugar, the sweetness is traditionally decorated with candied fruits and pine nuts, or filled with custard.
The most popular ritual of the night of San Juan is jumping over the bonfire. According to the legend, if you have the courage to go through the flames, you can go through any difficulty, the fire strengthens in the face of adversity.
